On December 20, 2024, Central Police University invited former Minister of Science and Technology Mr. Liang-Gee Chen and his wife, Ms. Su-Mei Wang, to deliver a special lecture titled "Crossing the Quicksand of Depression Together" to the university's faculty and students.

Former Minister Chen is a world-renowned IEEE Fellow and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in the United States. In 2010, he was awarded with the Engineering Science Award from The World Academy of Sciences and has also received numerous national awards for outstanding research and contributions. He has been a pivotal figure in advancing innovation, entrepreneurship education, and artificial intelligence (AI) in Taiwan. During his tenure as Minister of Science and Technology, he actively promoted Taiwan's AI industry and research strategies, fostering the development of a vibrant digital technology research and innovation ecosystem in Taiwan.

Former Minister Chen shared with the faculty and students of CPU the profound journey he and his wife undertook together to navigate through the "quicksand of depression," offering insights into their significant life experiences. He also emphasized the importance of facing mental health challenges with a mindset of "not rushing, seeking breakthroughs with steady progress" and "maintaining a grateful heart." He encouraged addressing problems courageously and highlighted the use of the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Action) to systematically plan, execute, evaluate, and adjust, while actively exploring various potential solutions. This proactive and structured approach, he noted, is key to successfully overcoming the difficulties akin to quicksand.

Former Minister Chen highlighted the "golden principles" for coping with depression, which he summarized as the three hearts—confidence, compassion, and patience—and the two intentions—the will to change together and the awareness to seek help together. He concluded by quoting a poem by Rabindranath Tagore: " Live yourself as a light. Because you don’t know, who by your light, out of the darkness." He also urged the audience to preserve kindness in their hearts, reminding them that they might never know who could overcome despair through their acts of kindness.
