Central Police University and Special Olympics Chinese Taipei held "2014 Special Olympics CPU Basketball Summer Camp" from August 1st to 3rd, 2014. This event helps children with intellectual disabilities to know basketball, build self-confidence, social competence and develop health and leisure exercise habits. One hundred athletes and their family, sixty volunteers of CPU and the staff of Special Olympics joined the event in a large, warm and lively atmosphere. It was hoped that through the activity, these children would have a spectacular and joyful summer.

President Jian-Sheng Diao was invited to cheer and welcome the Special Olympics athletes and their families to basketball camp. Led by Special Olympics artist volunteers, teams competed with each other by 3-on-3 basketball games after the opening ceremony, which, was followed by a burst of applause.

It was the first time for some children to attend a basketball camp. They were afraid to interact with other Special Olympics athletes at first. Under the guidance of camp volunteers, they gradually immersed into the group, which made their parents very pleased. One mother said that when her child was found with intellectual development obstacles, she was very sad, and her child has had a hard time growing up. Through the education and training of special education school, they learned to take care of themselves. A few years ago, she heard about the basketball camp which the Central Police University joint with the Special Olympics, and learnt that there is a chance for their children to interact with future police officers, she was very happy. Thus they applied for and attended the activity every year since then. Central Police University freshmen serving as volunteers said it was an unforgettable experience; and they’ll keep concerning about friends with special needs. When they served as a police leader in later years, they’re going to take more care to vulnerable populations.

Central Police University and Special Olympics Chinese Taipei have been co-organizing judo or basketball summer camp since 2009. CPU faculties had volunteer and sponsor Special Olympics Chinese Taipei through the “Law Enforcement Torch Run” charity events for 5 years without interruption. In the speech of Hsiu-Ying Wu, the secretary-general of Special Olympics Chinese Taipei, she especially gave her gratitude toward the assistance of Central Police University to let the event proceed smoothly and to a successful conclusion, she also appealed to everyone to care about the right of education for people with intellectual disabilities and their developments.

According to Chinese Taipei Special Olympics, the incidence of people with mental disabilities was up to 2% of the population, and it might happen in any family. Hence, how to help social integration of the mentally handicapped is a very important and difficult task. Special Olympics hold International Special Olympics Winter Games and International Special Olympics Summer Games every 4 years. It also offers the intellectual disabled many training and competition opportunities all around the world, so every athletic is able to join, and to show their sportsmanship of “Brave to Attempt, Fight to Win”!

The Chinese Taipei Special Olympics wishes that everyone could take actions to support and concern about the mentally disadvantaged, and they also welcoming all to participate in such grand event so as to aid intellectual disability and their family to get a better education and care in life.
