Dr. Henry C. Lee's forensic science lecture "From the crime scene to the court"

To promote the level of crime investigation, evidence forensic science, and establish professional role of forensic scientist in Taiwan, Central Police University, Taiwan Academy of Forensic Science, and Henry C. Lee Forensic Science Foundation had held a "Forensic Science Forum" meeting on April 03, 2012. Dr. Henry C. Lee, an international forensic science expert, was invited to deliver a lecture called "From the crime scene to the court".
Dr. Lee emphasized that once a forensic scientist steps into a crime scene, he/she should start adopting a diligent attitude as behaving in court. Justice of jurisdiction can only be ensured by taking crime investigation and the quality of collecting evidence seriously.
Dr. Lee believes forensic science plays an important part of solving criminal cases. A complete forensic work must contain crime scene investigation, laboratory forensic and court testimony. Crime scene and forensic scientist are closely related as if there is no crime then there would not be a scene, and if there is no scene then no forensic scientist would be needed. The first part of forensic science starts from a crime scene, every step of identifying, recording, collecting, and packing of crime scene evidence are important. The second part is laboratory forensic and most people think that finishing the forensic report is the end of a forensic scientist's duty; however, this part is very important to the following steps, which is testifying at court and accept cross-examination. When a forensic scientist sits on the witness box, he/she becomes the loneliest person in the world. He/she must be responsible for his/her forensic conclusion, and he/she has no one to depend on except his/her profession and dedication of work.
In addition, Dr. Lee also attended "Taiwan's police forensic working condition and future - Opportunity for new forensic scientist" forum. After an enthusiastic discussion, National Police Agency, Criminal Investigation Bureau, and forensic science center of every county and city came to a conclusion of two directions to cultivate new forensic scientists:
(1) Cultivate forensic science department's graduates from Central Police University are require the ability of working professionals.
(2) Effectively adjust and maintain the quality of proficiency of forensic scientist.
Through the "Forensic science forum", not only the forensic science knowledge of Dr. Lee has been absorbed but also made a discussion of our country's future forensic proficiency development. It is hoped that forensic technology and criminal investigation can be combined to face the challenge of advanced technology and new rising crime.
