Liberal Education in Police Training

Central Police University is a cradle of cultivating police officer. During the development of the course design, besides lecturing the professional knowledge, liberal education also plays an important role. On December 23, 2011, Vice Premier Jiang Yi-huah (former minister of Ministry of the Interior) went to the Central Police University and deliver a successful speech on "College liberal education's quality and connotation".
Vice Premier Jiang explain the meaning of college general education. He mentioned as a student with ideal personality through general education does not only require basic knowledge of human society and nature science. More importantly, they have to know how to think and criticize the meaning of self-existent, respect different life, be curious to the universe and full of exploration.
Generally speaking, western liberal education is a system or course of education suitable for the cultivation of a free human being which includes grammar, rhetoric, philosophy, mathematic, music... In the other hand, general education is not only one of the professional studies but also a basic education across the quality of subjects. Through western liberal education development from the middle ages to modern ages, we can see the challenges which modern general education is facing now, including the changing meaning of general education, the rejecting of generalize liberal education, the difficulties between common prescribed courses and average optional courses.
Vice premier Jiang emphasized that general education is different from professional
education or technical education. Its goal is not to train students to have a life-long skill or successful connection to their work but to cultivate students proper cultural capacity, life wisdom, thinking ability, communication skills and the energy of life-long learning. General education's connotation can be designed as "core field's optional courses", it should be placed between "professional prescribed courses"and "common courses". However the courses can't end up being bird courses that are easy to pass.
High quality general education can cultivate a talented person who has a wide eye-view. Through general education, our society can keep talented people who have the ability of thinking and judging the changing of the society, effectively link field-crossing knowledge, motivate the potential creativity and the raising of the ability of competition. To correspond to the intensive society changing, central police university's general education is planning towards the direction of "core field's optional courses", in order to reach the goal of police officers' liberal education.
